Introducing the packaging of Piranha LEDs

Piranha LED products have many advantages, because the bracket used by Piranha LED is made of copper and has a large area, so heat transfer and heat dissipation are fast. After the LED is lit, the heat generated by the pn junction can be quickly exported from the four legs of the bracket to the copper tape of the PCB. This LED piranha tube transfers heat faster than the φ3mm and φ5mm pin-type tubes, which can prolong the service life of the device. In general, the thermal resistance of piranha LEDs is half smaller than that of φ3mm and φ5mm tubes, so it is very popular with users.

1. The packaging process of piranha LED

The encapsulation of piranha LED has its particularity. First, the bracket of the piranha LED must be selected. According to the number of LED chips to be placed in each piranha tube, it is necessary to determine the shape, size and depth of the bowl punched in the piranha bracket.

Clean the stand when using it and fix the LED chip in the stand bowl. After drying, the two poles of the LED chip are welded, and then the corresponding die is selected according to the number of chips and the size of the light-emitting angle. Fill the mold with glue, and insert the piranha bracket with the soldered LED chip into the mold. After the glue is dry (dry in an oven), it can be demolded. It is then placed on a rib-cutting die to cut it out, followed by testing and sorting. The technical indicators of the Piranha LED are the same as those of the LEDs packaged in other ways. When multiple chips are packaged on a piranha bracket, the related thermal resistance should be considered, and the thermal resistance should be minimized to prolong the service life.

Since the Piranha LED has four legs, there should be four holes in it in order to mount the Piranha LED on the PCB. Because the two electrodes of the LED are connected to the four legs, the two legs are connected to one electrode. When installing, it is necessary to confirm which two legs are positive and which two legs are negative, and then design the PCB.

The shapes of piranha encapsulation die are also various, including φ3mm round head and φ5mm round head, as well as flat head shape with concave shape. According to the requirements of the light emitting angle, various packaging dies can be selected.

2. Application of Piranha LED

Piranha LEDs are getting more and more attention, because they have better heat dissipation, larger viewing angle, less light decay and longer life than φ5mm LEDs. Piranha LEDs are ideal for line lights, backlit light boxes and light sources in large font slots.

Because line lights are generally used as contour lights for high-rise buildings in cities, and the light box advertising screens of the backlight and the lights with large fonts are placed at high places, if the LED lights are not bright or dimmed, its maintenance is very difficult. Due to the good heat dissipation of the piranha LED, compared with the ordinary LED of φ5mm, its light decay is small and the life is long, so the use time will also be long, which can save considerable maintenance costs.


Piranha LEDs can also be used as brake lights, turn signals, and reversing lights in cars. Because the piranha LED has advantages in heat dissipation, it can withstand a current of 70~80mA. In the driving car, the voltage of the battery often fluctuates greatly, especially when the brake light is used, the current will suddenly increase, but this situation does not have much impact on the piranha LED, so it is widely used in automobiles lighting.
